Description

At room temperature, nitric acid is a colorless to yellow liquid with a suffocating odor. The color is due to the release of nitrogen oxides, especially nitrogen dioxide, into the air after exposure to light. Nitric acid is used in the manufacture of fertilizers, gunpowder and explosives, pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuticals, and primarily in the production of organic and inorganic nitrates. It is also used for electroplating, pickling, and cleaning metals. Nitric acid can be corrosive to the skin, eyes, nose, mucous membranes, respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts, or any tissue it contacts. Severe burns with scarring and necrosis may occur. Milder exposures can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory and digestive tracts.
