Description

Chloroform, trichloromethane, or methyl trichloride is a chemical compound with the formula CHCl3. It can be obtained by chlorination as a methane or ethyl alcohol derivative or, more commonly in the pharmaceutical industry, by using iron and acid on carbon tetrachloride.
At room temperature, it is a volatile, non-flammable, colorless liquid with a pungent, sweet, citrus-like odor, described by Samuel Guthrie as having a “delicious taste.” It decomposes slowly through the combined action of oxygen and sunlight, turning into phosgene (COCl2) and hydrogen chloride (HCl); it is therefore recommended to store it in amber glass bottles away from light.
