Description
Sandarac or sandaraca is a
yellowish resin obtained from juniper, the sandarac tree, and other
cupressaceous plants. The resin is a natural exudate of the tree, but its production is
stimulated by making incisions in the bark. It is
marketed in the form of small balls or tears. It is
slightly harder than mastic. Mixed with different
alcohols or solvents, a varnish is obtained that was used as a protector on
old photographic plates.
