Shellac is an organic substance obtained from the resinous residue or secretion of a small red insect called the lac bug (Laccifer lacca or Kerria lacca), which inhabits parts of Southeast Asia such as Indonesia or Sri Lanka. It is light orange in color and comes in the form of fine, translucent flakes. Shellac is soluble in ethyl alcohol in proportions of 15% to 20% depending on the final finish.
