Shellac is an organic substance obtained from the residue or resinous secretion of a small red insect called the lac bug (Laccifer lacca) or Kerria lacca, which lives in Southeast Asian locations such as Indonesia or Sri Lanka. It is dark orange in colour and comes in the form of fine, translucent flakes. Shellac is soluble in ethyl alcohol at proportions of 15% to 20%, depending on the final finish.
