Description
Toluene or methylbenzene (C6H5CH3) is an aromatic hydrocarbon from which derivatives of benzene, benzoic acid, phenol, caprolactam, saccharin, toluene diisocyanate (TDI), raw material for the production of polyurethane, medicines, dyes, perfumes, TNT, and detergents are obtained.
Its name derives from Tolu balsam extracted from the Myroxylon balsamum tree, from which Henri Etienne Sainte-Claire Deville first obtained it in 1844 by dry distillation.
